About Gears

The Garrett Engineering and Robotics Society (GEARS) is a county-wide "robotics" club anchored by the existing Technology Camps and FIRST robotics programs, and located in 5000 sq feet of mixed office/lab space in the town of Accident Maryland (116 Industrial Park Drive).

GEARS is a Tax Exempt 501(c)(3) Corporation, who's charter is to enhance the education of area residents through exciting technical problem-solving activities leading up to robotic competitions. These competitions may be local, regional or national programs attracting both students and adults to technology-based activities.

The county has experienced how regional robotic competitions bring out the best in our tech-savvy students and mentors. The students who have been on a robotics team are looking towards college and career paths in engineering and robotics. So, to expand this opportunity to other county residents, and to nurture the enthusiasm for technology and teamwork, GEARS provides a year-round forum for robotic design, construction and competition. Membership will be open to all ages, and industry participation will be encouraged through mentoring and sponsorship.

GEARS will establish a series of robotics and engineering "games" based on popular sports models. A variety of competitions will be targeted for different skill levels (from K to college), and active participation will be encouraged from older siblings, parents, co-workers and corporations. Local events will be scheduled and publicized to attract participation. Local events will evolve into regional competitions where teams from other areas will be invited to compete in Garrett County.

As team members gain experience and confidence, they transition to becoming mentors, thus learning valuable life lessons as part of a growing community. Specialties develop within the club, enabling senior members to host external "Learning Sessions" to spread technology understanding. Community based organizations such as Boy and Girls scouts, 4-H, and other youth groups have the opportunity to visit and participate in various robotics-based activities.

GEARS fosters community technology awareness through demonstrations, VIP tours and the identification of community needs that could be solved with a robotic solution.

GEARS will also provide educational and competitive opportunities for visitors to Garrett County.
