GEARS is Garrett County’s year-round engineering & robotics “club”, which supports the existing FIRST Robotics teams as well as creating its own engineering competitions, camps, and robot construction projects.

Our motto is: Inquire – Invent – Construct - Compete

Membership fees are as follows:

Family (houshold) $75
Adult $50
Youth/Student $25

Since GEARS is a 501(c)(3) charity, your membership is Tax Deductable.

In addition to becoming part of the GEARS community, members also receive these benefits:

  • Free admission to the GEARS Center for meetings, classes and public events.
  • Supervised access to the GEARS Center resources for robot design and building.
  • Free participation in business tours and other community awareness events.
  • Priority enrollment and reduced fees for organized competitions.
  • A voice on the www.GEARSinc.org website forum.
  • A 10% discount on GEARS Gear.
  • Members can also earn free continuing membership by volunteering at GEARS events.

    During robotic projects, members may be introduced to any of the following topics:

  • Basic machines (gears, levers, wheels, structures, materials, reliability)
  • Electrical components (wiring, switches, batteries, fuses, relays, motors)
  • Pneumatic components (compressors, actuators, pressure switches)
  • Computer hardware (micro-controllers, PLC’s, analog & digital interfaces, wireless)
  • Computer software (Basic, C, C++, Java, RoboLab, Labview)
  • Machine construction (part fabrication, machining, welding, fasteners, assembly)
  • Project management (teamwork, problem solving, design, schedules, budgets)

    Members will be encouraged to learn more about things they already know, learn some brand new skills, and teach what they learn to others.
